We want to congratulate you on your acceptance to the University of North Texas! We are so pleased you have become a "Mean Green" Eagle. The START (Student Academic Readiness Team) Office is your initial point of contact for UNT if you have questions. Our office is here to help you "START" your UNT experience.

In order for the START Office to better serve you, should you call our office, please let us know that you are an "RSG Eagle." So, what does that stand for??? "RSG" stands for Ready, Set, Go to UNT. When you identify yourself to us as an RSG Eagle, we will know what information you may need from us and will be better able to serve you.

The START Office also needs to verify your TSI status before you attend an Orientation. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a State of Texas program which requires testing in reading, mathematics, and writing. TSI is designed to ensure that all students attending public colleges and universities in Texas have the skills necessary to perform effectively in college-level coursework. Check the list below to see if you are exempt from TSI Testing. If not, we may need you to take the Accuplacer, Asset, Compass, or THEA test prior to orientation. You may be exempt if:

  1. Any one of the follow is met:
    • Reading: ACT: Composite 23 and English 19; SAT: Composite 1070* and Critical Reading/Verbal 500; TAKS: ELA 2200 & Writing Essay score 3
    • Math: ACT: Composite 23 and Math 19;SAT: Composite 1070* and Math 500;TAKS: Math 2200
    • Writing: ACT: Composite 23 and English 19;SAT: Composite 1070* and Critical Reading/Verbal 500;TAKS: ELA 2200 & Writing Essay score 3
  2. *SAT Composite = Critical Reading plus Math

    ACT and SAT scores are valid for a period of five (5) years from date taken.TAKS test scores are valid for a period of three (3) years from date taken.

  3. You have graduated with an associate or baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher education.
  4. You transfer from a private or out-of-state institution of higher education and have satisfactorily completed college-level coursework as determined by UNT.
  5. You previously attended another Texas public institution of higher education and have been determined to have met readiness standards by that institution.
  6. You are serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States and have been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment.
  7. On or after August 1, 1990, you were honorable discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the Texas National Guard or served as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States.

If you do not meet any of the above exemptions, please contact our office (START Office 940-565-4403) as soon as possible so we can help you make appropriate testing arrangements.
